One of the hardest parts of moving is packing up all of your belongings. With these tips, packing for moving will go a lot smoother and your belongings will stay safe during the journey to your new home.

Start Early

Don’t put off packing until the last moment. You should ideally start purging unwanted items from your home at least 2 months before moving day. You can start boxing up items you don’t use frequently as early as a month before moving day.

Get Rid of Unwanted Items

As soon as you know that you are moving, begin going through your belongings and separating out any items you don’t want. Arrange for these items to be donated or have a garage sale. You can also sell valuable items on websites like Craigslist or eBay.

Clean and Organize!

Starting about 1 month before moving day, you should clean and organize your home. Sort out unwanted items while you do this. Try to put all items back in their proper place in the home so you don’t end up packing screwdrivers with your dishes and packing collectibles with kids’ toys.

Note Items which Require Special Packing

Identify any items which might be difficult to pack, such as large framed objects, mirrors, fragile items, chandeliers, flat-screen TVs, and other large electronics. Make a packing plan for these items and obtain any necessary packing items. You might have your moving company arrange for custom crating for some items, such as valuable paintings.

Calculate How Many Boxes You Need,/p>

Generally, you will need 10-15 boxes per room of your house, plus dish packs and wardrobe boxes (if you are using them). The following is a basic estimate of how many boxes are typically needed for moving:

Use New Boxes

As tempting as it is to use used boxes from the supermarket for moving, it is generally better to purchase new boxes. They will be sturdier, less likely to be contaminated by bugs and mold, and won’t make your belongings smell like old vegetables. If you do use used boxes, then get them from places like furniture stores.

Label All Boxes

Buy some professional moving labels at your local office supplies store. Choose colored labels and use one color per room. On moving day, make sure to have extra labels handy. Put the colored labels on the appropriate door so the movers know where to unload the boxes.

Pack By Room

Try to pack items which belong in the same room together. For example, you don’t want to pack items from your bedroom with items from your children’s rooms. Packing by room makes it easier to unpack.

Don’t Leave Empty Space in Boxes

Empty space in boxes isn’t just a waste of space. It also means that the boxes might get crushed if a heavy box is put on top of them. Try to fill empty space with items like sweaters or towels.

Pack Dishes On their Sides

Dishes should be individually wrapped and packed on their sides, not flat. This reduces the amount of pressure on them and reduces the likelihood that they will break. Use dish packs for packing to make it easier to safely pack your dishes.

Don’t Over-Pack Boxes

If you stuff too many items in a box, it will not close properly and thus won’t stack well in the truck. Boxes which are packed with too many heavy items may also break open, causing all items to spill and possibly break. Remember to reserve smaller boxes for heavy items and always put heavy items on the bottom of boxes.
